It’s not impossible to have ANY passion with comfort or ANY comfort with passion. It’s that the two don’t coexist easily. The very thing that ignites passion is friction and instability. Once again, look at your past. Passion is usually brief, intense and rocky. Comfort, on the other hand, tends to be softer and more nurturing.
Comfort, therefore, is not nearly as exciting, but it tends to last longer. Studies say that passion usually dissipates in 18-24 months. Which is why people who expect their passion to last for 40 years, in essence, are trying to defy the laws of nature.
Sucks to be a short dude

prefer taller men, but they’re willing to relax their standards for the Ron Perelmans of the world, as revealed in a study of more than 20,000 online daters by Gunter Hitsch and Ali Hortacsu of the University of Chicago and Dan Ariely of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
They found that a 5-foot-8 man was just as successful in getting dates as a 6-footer if he made more money — precisely $146,000 a year more. For a 5-foot-2 man, the number was $277,000. [For more of these trade-offs, see nytimes.com/tierneylab.]

Want to pass on this super fun motor home. Had some great camping trips in it! Kept it in good clean condition. Hoping a family or person in need can use and enjoy it, that’s why its offered at this price. Runs fine, everything works in it: heater, fridge, stove oven, lights, electrical, toilet, sinks, shower, tub ( a/c not working though). Can sleep 6-7 people. Has two sets of bunk beds (one lower bunk pulls out to a full/queen size) and the dinning room table turns into a bed too. About 22-26 feet long, can check that for you. Has expired reg and will be about $500.00 or so to get it current. On private property now. There are some thing that need to be done, cosmetic only, such as: skylight covers will have to be replaced, leaking, small tear in one of thee captains chairs, replace light bulbs, stuff like that. It’s on private property in half moon bay but unlocked. 650-720-0205 there are some other sportscoach motorhomes listed in the for sale section of cl, they are showing pics and this one looks almost exactly the same :)
“We humans are unhappy in large part because we are insatiable; after working hard to get what we want, we routinely lose interest in the object of our desire. Rather than feeling satisfied, we feel a bit bored, and in response to this boredom, we go to form new, even grander desires.
…
One key to happiness, then, is to forestall the adaption process: we need to take steps to prevent ourselves from taking for granted, once we get them, the things we worked so hard to get.
…
The Stoics…recommended that we spend time imagining that we have lost the things we value–that our wife has left us, our car was stolen, or we lost our job. Doing this, the Stoics thought, will make us value our wife, our car, and our job more than we otherwise would…remember that all we have is “on loan” from Fortune, which can reclaim it without our permission–indeed, without even advance notice. Thus, “we should love all of our dear ones, but always with the thought that we have no promise that we may keep them forever–nay, no promise even that we may keep them for long.” While enjoying the companionship of loved ones, then, we should periodically stop to reflect on the possibility that this enjoyment will come to an end. If nothing else, our own death will end it.”
You can read a very nice summary of the book in this three part essay series on BoingBoing:

1. I am sure to become old; I cannot avoid ageing.
2. I am sure to become ill; I cannot avoid illness.
3. I am sure to die; I cannot avoid death.
4. I must be separated and parted from all that is dear and beloved to me.
5. I am the owner of my actions, heir of my actions, actions are the womb (from which I have sprung), actions are my relations, actions are my protection. Whatever actions I do, good or bad, of these I shall become their heir.
QT: Stoic Quotes

This is what you ought to practise from morning till evening. Begin with the smallest, the most vulnerable things, like a pot, or a cup, and then advance to a tunic, a paltry dog, a mere horse, a bit of land; next yourself, your body and its limbs, your children, wife, brothers. Look about on every side and cast these things away from you. Purify your judgements, lest something not your own have become fastened to you, or grown together with you, and cause you pain when it is torn loose. (Disc. 4. 1. 111-12)
“Rather than working to fulfill whatever desires we find in our head, we need to work at preventing certain desires from forming and eliminating many of the desires that have formed. And rather than wanting new things, we need to work at wanting the things we already have.” –

How the city hurts your brain
25-Jan-11
Now scientists have begun to examine how the city affects the brain, and the results are chastening. Just being in an urban environment, they have found, impairs our basic mental processes. After spending a few minutes on a crowded city street, the brain is less able to hold things in memory, and suffers from reduced self-control. While it’s long been recognized that city life is exhausting — that’s why Picasso left Paris — this new research suggests that cities actually dull our thinking, sometimes dramatically so.
