Am I Just Figure Skating?

Via Penelope trunk

Being an expert is not what you think, probably. For one thing, the article explains that “there is no correlation between IQ and expert performance in fields such as chess, music, sports, and medicine. The only innate differences that turn out to be significant—and they matter primarily in sports – are height and body size. “

So what factor does correlate with success? One thing emerges very clearly is that successful performers “had practiced intensively, had studied with devoted teachers, and had been supported enthusiastically by their families throughout their developing years.”

I am panicking that maybe I am just figure skating again. Maybe I am doing something I’ll never be great at. I worry about this because I don’t actually know what I’m doing. Am I getting good at bringing a startup from fruition to exit? Am I getting good at writing career advice?

Everybody’s An Expert : The New Yorker

Human beings who spend their lives studying the state of the world, in other words, are poorer forecasters than dart-throwing monkeys, who would have distributed their picks evenly over the three choices.

Oakland forces NIMBY to pay $17,000 in permit fees

“It’s like spending a year in line at the DMV, and at the end you still don’t know if you’re going to get the car title,” said Mike Snook, one of the three Nimby staffers. “It’s killing us.”

Nimby has so far spent more than $17,000 on the permit process, money that has been almost impossible to recoup because they’re not allowed to host fundraising events, said Nimby organizer Rachael Norman.

AFP: WikiLeaks shuts due to lack of funds, hopes to be back soon

WASHINGTON — Whistleblower website WikiLeaks has temporarily shut down because of financial difficulties.

WikiLeaks.org announced it was suspending operations in a message on its homepage that included an appeal to the public for donations.

“To concentrate on raising the funds necessary to keep us alive into 2010, we have reluctantly suspended all other operations, but will be back soon,” it said.

WikiLeaks, which relies on public contributions for much of its funding, said it had raised “just over 130,000 dollars for this year but cannot meaningfully continue operations until costs are covered.”

It said its costs are 200,000 dollars a year and 600,000 dollars a year if staff are paid.

WikiLeaks, run by Sunshine Press, describes itself as a “non-profit organization funded by human rights campaigners, investigative journalists, technologists and the general public.”

The WikiLeaks’ website says the organization was founded by “Chinese dissidents, mathematicians and startup company technologists, from the US, Taiwan, Europe, Australia and South Africa.”

It claims to have published more than one million documents from dissident communities and anonymous sources around the world about government and corporate corruption, human rights violations and other subjects.

Whatever your political stripe, I think you’ll agree that wikileaks does good work. I’ve donated $25.00.

To help Haiti’s earthquake victims, change U.S. immigration laws – washingtonpost.com

After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in 2005, one of the principal ways its victims helped themselves was by leaving. Katrina prompted one of the biggest resettlements in American history. Who would have blocked Interstate 10 with armed guards, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to suffer in the disaster zone, no matter how much assistance was coming in from outside? We wouldn’t have done that, because it would have made us collectively responsible for their continued suffering. Why then, in the thoughtful debate that has emerged over how best to aid Haiti and help its citizens help themselves, are Americans still quiet about this sinister face of our immigration policy?
