Milton Friedman to speak in Palo Alto

When I was at Stanford, the Hoover Institution sponsored a free lecture by Milton Friedman. Somehow, I saw a request for “volunteer hosts” who could host non-Stanford students who wanted to attend the lecture. So I volunteered. The night before the lecture my guest arrived. He was a black man with dreadlocks, in his mid-20's.

Not your stereotypical college libertarian.

He also seemed a little standoffish. For one thing, he didn't want to sleep in my dorm room. He said he preferred sleeping on the couch in the student lounge in the basement. Some of the other residents asked me about the strange guy in the basement. I nervously told them he was with me.

Fortunately, nothing happened during the night, and the next morning, we went to the lecture. After the lecture, Friedman took questions from the audience. Guess who was first at the microphone? Mr. Dreadlocks, my guest. And he started heckling Friedman. After a lengthy back and forth, he wouldn't leave the microphone to let other audience members talk. Eventually though, Friedman was able to get the guy to shut up and let others ask questions. I wish I had written down what happened Friedman said, because it was the most graceful handling of a hostile questioner I had ever seen.

Anyway, Friedman will be part of panel of speakers in Palo Alto, on Friday April 15 (see below the cut). If you're in the area, I highly recommend attending.

celebrate on April 15th or some friends to revolt with, please join the
large contingent of SJSU Econ Dept faculty and students who will be
