In the 19th century, the U.S. endured the Civil War. In the 20th century, WWI and WWII. (Plus a number of “minor” conflicts, Spanish-American War, Korean War, Vietnam, Gulf War I/II). Although I hope that we can avoid it, it seems wise to prepare for conflicts of similar or greater magnitude in the 21st century. Most of this stuff would be useful preparations for other natural/man-made disasters in any case.
